Images are an essential part of websites, blogs, social media and in some cases, videos. Studies have shown that social media posts have greater engagement with an image than without. And very few people rate websites lacking images as aesthetically pleasing.
So, where do you go for images?
If you’re a small business owner, you go to the easiest, quickest reservoir of images: Google Images. And if a business owner finds something that says the image is “Royalty-Free”, then all the better, right?
Unfortunately, many (if not most) of the images on Google Images are copyright protected. And “Royalty-Free” doesn’t mean it’s fine to use as you wish. A lot of those images are owned by image companies, which can sue you — you — for a $1,000 (and easily more) for each copyright violation they find.
As a marketing guy, when I take on a new client, I perform a marketing audit. One of the things I look for is how many unpaid copyrighted images does the client currently own? I almost always discover some.
